About Our Practice

Heritage expertise built on academic rigour and practical experience

Our Philosophy

We approach every historic building as a unique document of human endeavour. Each structure carries evidence of the people who designed, built, inhabited, and modified it through successive generations. Our role is to read and interpret these layers whilst guiding sensitive interventions that allow buildings to continue serving contemporary needs.

Conservation architecture demands a particular mindset—one that values restraint over transformation, understanding before action, and reversibility where possible. We resist the temptation to impose our aesthetic preferences on historic fabric, instead seeking solutions that emerge from careful analysis of what each building requires.

Our History

The practice was established in 2004 by a small group of conservation specialists who shared frustration with the generic approach too often applied to historic buildings. What began as a three-person consultancy has grown into a respected team of twelve professionals, though we have deliberately maintained a scale that permits genuine collaboration on every project.

Over two decades, we have developed particular expertise in Georgian domestic architecture, Victorian industrial buildings, and twentieth-century heritage—categories often overlooked in traditional conservation practice. Our project archive now spans more than 340 completed assignments across residential, commercial, ecclesiastical, and civic structures.

Professional Standards

Our commitment to professional excellence is reflected in our accreditations and affiliations. All architectural staff hold conservation accreditation from the RIBA or equivalent professional bodies. Our building surveyors maintain RICS membership with specialist heritage credentials. The practice itself holds corporate membership of the Institute of Historic Building Conservation.

We have been appointed to Historic England's approved consultant register for heritage at risk projects and regularly contribute to training programmes for local authority conservation officers. Several team members serve on regional design review panels, providing independent assessment of development proposals affecting historic environments.

Our Approach

Every engagement begins with thorough research and documentation. Before recommending any course of action, we invest time understanding what makes a building significant—its architectural qualities, historical associations, construction techniques, and relationship to its setting. This foundational work shapes every subsequent decision.

We believe strongly in collaborative working. Heritage projects typically involve multiple stakeholders—owners, occupiers, planning authorities, funding bodies, contractors, and sometimes affected communities. Successful outcomes depend on clear communication, realistic expectations, and genuine respect for different perspectives. We see our role partly as facilitators who help reconcile competing interests around shared objectives.

Finally, we remain committed to traditional craft skills. While we embrace modern survey technologies and analytical methods, we understand that historic buildings were made by hand and often require hand repair. We maintain close relationships with specialist tradespeople—stonemasons, joiners, plasterers, metalworkers—whose knowledge complements our own architectural expertise.
